Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

The book, "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher, a student suicides because of 13 reasons. One of the reason is because of a person named Courtney Crimsen. Everything about her is pretty or perfect, but Hannah Baker found out that it's all an act. Courtney's a member, masquerader, and a perfectionist. Those archetypes made up Courtney's personality, making everyone believe the action that she does, is her personality.

Being a member, masquerader, and a perfectionist isn't easy, which makes Courtney Crimsen an interesting character. By being a member, Courtney earns her reputation in fitting in. She was good at connecting to people, and understanding others. She agrees to everything, making her a person that's good to hang out with. For example, when Courtney asks Hannah to go to the party together, Hannah disagreed, since Courtney has been ignoring her. Of course, she was surprised, since everyone wants to go to a party with her, or even to be seen entering a party with her. Courtney made up excuses, saying that Hannah must have misread things, and she would want a chance to get to know her better. Also, being a perfectionist is the hardest. When you see someone that's perfect and has no flaws, you would most likely want to hang out with that person, although no one is perfect. Courtney is pretty everywhere, like her hair, smile, and skin, and she's popular. She's nice and sweet to everyone she contacts with. She always thinks before doing or saying things, for example, she poses perfectly. In the picture where Hannah And Courtney were being silly, you can definitely see how her pose is perfect. Just like Hannah said, "In a high school, people are always watching so there's always a reason to pose." Also, Courtney's a masquerader, meaning that she pretends to be something or someone she is not, which is basically the whole point of her. Even if she's the most perfect and popular girl in school, she would still have all the reputations, friends, and boyfriends, if she's being herself.

I understand why Courtney wants to be perfect, but she doesn't have to make everyone like her. There are much better ways get friends and gain reputation, instead of forcing yourself to be perfect. Although Courtney is just a side character, her actions are meaningful. You see people trying to be perfect sometimes, but normally it'll wear off, but for Courtney, she has to be perfect every time.
